Conestoga Fire

May 2nd, 2009

There was a fire at the Conestoga Restaurant last night (5/1/09), which apparently started in the rear sometime after closing. The state fire inspector will be here Monday. Until then the building is sealed, so damage is not yet assessed, and thus no projected date for reopening at this time.

JC, Donna, Paula, and the staff have worked really hard to make this Tulia icon a success. I’m sure they would appreciate all words of encouragement.

Blog to be discontinued

April 29th, 2009

The purpose of starting this blog was to try to keep people up to date regarding the community. It was hoped that it would evoke some worthwhile comments. However, to date we have had exactly one comment from someone other than a spammer. Trying to keep the blog up to date requires a lot of time that this office can spend in more productive ways. Also, since there are now two newspapers serving the community (as well as Swisher Currents) the usefulness of the blog is doubtful.

If you are the person who has been reading this, we thank you and regret any inconvenience. The blog will be available through 5/15/09, when the space will be utilized in other ways.

Hail Storm

April 20th, 2009

That was quite a storm we had here last Thursday. We had 5” of precipitation at our house, but I’ve heard reports of up to 7”. Shortly after I was notified that a storm was on the way, I accessed the live radar on KFDA’s website. It showed a very small cell just south of town, which I figured would blow over shortly. When it didn’t, I accessed the radar again and realized a major storm was building. It continued to build–basically over the city—and dumped hail like I have never seen. High winds and rain accompanied the hail, but it was the ice that caused the problem. It fell in such quantities that storm drains—on roofs and streets—were blocked, causing the water to pile up. The roof of the shop at Bar-W Ford collapsed, as did the Wilbur-Ellis building (formerly the Swisher Tire building.) Many buildings had other damage.

The darndest thing was the closing of I-27, originally due to hail accumulation. TxDOT called out snowplows to remove the hail. As of this writing, Vigo Road (FM 146) just north of town and 10th St, between Maxwell and El Paso are blocked by water.

As far as we know, there were no injuries reported due to the storm. Pictures will be posted later.
